Surgery is generally considered reconstructive if it is performed to correct underlying pathology, and is aesthetic where it is done to improve non-pathological appearances. For example, a face lift surgery may be performed in cases of one-sided facial paralysis to restore symmetry for reconstructive purposes, or on both sides for aesthetic purposes. Similarly, breast implants may be inserted for post-cancer reconstruction or for aesthetic augmentation purposes.
